Chromatic Character Celebration is a gift exchange for art, fic, podfic, and vids that focus on one or more chromatic characters.

For the purposes of this event, a chromatic character is any character who is not white, not portrayed by a white actor, and/or is a member of a marginalized racial/ethnic group. This includes mixed-race characters (including white-appearing mixed-race characters) and Romani characters. More information about who counts as a chromatic character is available below.

Schedule:

Nominations: June 28-July 9, 23:59 UTC (countdown to close)
Signups: July 12-July 23, 23:59 UTC (countdown to close)
Assignments: July 27, 23:59 UTC

Works Due: September 1, 23:59 UTC (countdown to deadline)
Works Revealed: September 8, 23:59 UTC (countdown to work reveals)
Creators Revealed: September 15, 23:59 UTC (countdown to creator reveals)

Nominations:

You may nominate up to 10 fandoms, with 10 character slots for each fandom. Every nominated character must be chromatic. Group nominations are allowed in the format “Group: A & B” or “Group: A/B.” Every character in the group nominated must be chromatic.

Less specific nominations such as “Group: Any Superhero Character & Any Non-Superhero Character” or “Group: Any Jedi Character/Any Jedi Character,” as well as larger group nominations such as “Any Starfleet Officer” will be accepted with the understanding that the nomination applies only to chromatic characters (i.e., the example nominations are equivalent to “Group: Any Chromatic Superhero Character & Any Chromatic Non-Superhero Character,” “Group: Any Chromatic Jedi Character/Any Chromatic Jedi Character,” and “Any Chromatic Starfleet Officer” respectively)

Please be as specific and unambiguous in your nominations as possible, especially when one portrayal of a character may qualify while another portrayal of the same character may not. For example, in The Witcher TV series, Yennefer is portrayed by an actress of British and Indian descent, while in the game series, the model is a white woman. TV Yennefer is eligible to be nominated, while game Yennefer is not.

When possible, nominations should be disambiguated, in the format “A (Fandom)” or “Group: A & B (Fandom)”. For example, Jimmy Woo from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be nominated as “Jimmy Woo (Marvel Cinematic Universe)”, and Jimmy and Monica Rambeau would be nominated as “Group: Monica Rambeau & Jimmy Woo (Marvel Cinematic Universe)”. Please nominate crossovers under “Crossover Fandom” and identify which canon each character is from, such as “Group: Sam Wilson (MCU) & Wei Wuxian (MDZS)”.
Original works and RPF are both allowed. All nominated persons under RPF fandoms must be over 18 and famous in their own right.

For tags that canonically have piping, such as Maito Gai | Might Guy (Naruto), you may leave off the piping and nominate as the most commonly-used name of the character instead.

Does My Fave Qualify?

- White Ashkenazim, depending on cultural context, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Sephardi and Mizrahi Jewish characters are considered chromatic for this exchange.

Some examples of characters who qualify, but might be considered “edge cases” for whatever reason:
- Humanoid aliens or fantastical beings portrayed by people of color
  • Examples: Teyla Emmagan (Stargate Atlantis), Tuvok (Star Trek VOY), Raphael (Supernatural)

- Characters from audio media without a canonical race who are portrayed by people of color
  • Examples: Isabel Lovelace (Wolf 359), Dr. Bright (The Bright Sessions)

- Characters from speculative fiction who don’t have the same cultural context of a particular Earth ethnicity/race, but would be perceived as chromatic today
  • Examples: Essun (The Broken Earth Trilogy – NK Jemisin), Kel Cheris (The Machineries of Empire – Yoon Ha Lee), Baldr (American Gods TV)

- Characters with no canonical race/ethnicity who are usually portrayed as chromatic in fanwork
  • Examples: Aziraphale (Good Omens – Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, book only), Jon Sims (The Magnus Archives)

- Humanoid aliens or fantastical beings from visual media (such as comics, video games, or animation) who appear chromatic
  • Examples: Durkon Thundershield (Order of the Stick), Usiel (Darksiders), Allura (Voltron: Legendary Defender), Catra (She-Ra TV 2018)

- Characters who either have no canonical race/ethnicity or are canonically white, but who are portrayed by significant subsets of fandom as chromatic
  • Examples: Hermione Granger (Harry Potter), Taako Taaco (The Adventure Zone: Balance), Vol’jin (World of Warcraft)

Some examples of characters who will not qualify:
- White characters voiced by people of color
  • Example: Ciel Phantomhive (Kuroshitsuji)

- Fantastical beings or humanoid aliens portrayed by white people (even if other characters of the same race/species qualify)
  • Example: Alexander Rozhenko (Star Trek TNG, DS9), The Hulk (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

Ultimately, if you believe a character should count as chromatic, but it may not be obvious from a cursory google search, please feel free to leave a comment on the concurrent clarifications post.

The above rules are thorough, but possibly not comprehensive. Mod decisions may be made on a case-by-case basis if needed.

Signups:

You must request a minimum of 3 fandoms, and a maximum of 10. Repeat fandoms are allowed as long as 3 unique fandoms are present within the signup.

You must offer a minimum of 3 fandoms, and a maximum of 10.

In each request and offer, you must select between 1-15 characters and 1-4 media types. OR matching will be done on fandom, character, and media type. You are guaranteed to match only on one combination of fandom, character, and media type.

Requirements:

All request fills must do the following:
1. Respect DNWs (Do Not Wants) stated clearly within the signup itself. DNWs included in other places (like a letter) will not be enforced.
2. Respect accessibility requests stated clearly within the signup itself. If a recipient asks that a vid not include flashing lights, or a fic to be formatted to be screenreader-friendly, and the creator violates that accessibility request, it will be considered a DNW violation.
3. Provide content warnings for race or ethnicity-based hate crimes or racial violence.
4. Include one or more characters from one fandom in one media type requested by the recipient.
5. Be the product of a good faith effort.

A note on accessibility requests:
- If you are requesting something vague (such as screenreader compatibility), it is your responsibility to clarify what, specifically, works best for your particular screenreader. There will be a brief guide with some general outlines and links for best practices, but it is ultimately the requester's responsibility to be more specific if needed.

In this exchange, race- or ethnicity-based violence and raceplay are both considered opt-in. That is, if a recipient does not explicitly state that they are alright with their gift containing racial violence and/or raceplay, a creator should not include those elements in the gift they create.

Art request fills must do the following:
1. Meet all above requirements.
2. Be a complete piece of drawn art by the creator, either traditionally or digitally.

Fic request fills must do the following:
1. Meet all above requirements.
2. Be at least 1,000 words.

Podfic request fills must do the following:
1. Meet all above requirements.
2. Be a complete, edited recording of a work that is at least 1,000 words, OR be a complete, edited recording of a work created specifically for this exchange that is at least 500 words. Sound effects, cover art, and music are not required.

Vid request fills must do the following:
1. Meet all above requirements.
2. Be at least 60 seconds in length.

Gifts should be a surprise: do not discuss your assignment in public spaces. You may discuss details of your assignment with a beta reader, listener, or viewer if necessary. You may not post your work to other sites until creator reveals.

Artists may sign their work before creator reveals. Podficcers and vidders may include their usual credits with the work and may host the work wherever is convenient, but the AO3 post will remain anonymous until creator reveals.

Other Policies:

There is no penalty for defaulting. To default, go to the AO3 assignment page. On the top right of the assignment, there should be buttons that say “Fulfill” and “Default.” Click on “Default” and confirm your choice, which will alert the mod account so that a pinch hitter can be found.

Extensions may be requested up to 24 hours before the deadline. You must include your AO3 name, your recipient’s AO3 name, and the length of the extension you are requesting. Extensions requested after there are less than 24 hours to the deadline may be rejected.

Bad behavior and bad-faith participation will not be tolerated. Consequences may range from a one-round ban to complete bans from future rounds. Bad behavior includes, but is not limited to, harassing other participants, deliberately skirting DNWs, or causing emergency post-deadline pinch hits.

I'd disagree with your Cloud Strife example. Characters in most of Japanese popculture are portrayed in heavily stylized way that obscures real world racial signifiers. Explicitly Japanese characters can have blonde hair and blue eyes (Usagi Tsukino)or mid-dark skin (Yoruichi Shihouin). In general, unless explicitly stated by the narrative (for example when the story takes place in France), all characters will be read as Japanese/Asian, even when they have "exotic" sounding English-inspired names. I'd say Final Fantasy and for example Gundam characters would be edge cases.

This is interesting and I’m… definitely tempted. I do have some questions!

1. For the exchange itself, if you match on an individual character (I know it’s all in the character field but not a group), can you include info in your sign-up about shipping and character dynamics you might be interested in as long as you don’t box your gifter in?

For example, for Benjamin Sisko there’s multiple platonic and shippy dynamics I’m interested in that solely feature chromatic characters, some that feature Sisko &/ a white character, and like one ship I’d absolutely DNW and I’d also be fine with a solo fic where Sisko is the only character because he’s trapped on Empok Nor or chilling in a curtain fic on a cabin in Bajor.

2. Could you match on a fandom where you’d be happy to receive a work that’s solely about that fandom but opt-into crossover elements if the gifter is interested?

Like, match on Doctor Who with Group: Martha Jones/Bill Potts, but note in your letter sign up that you’d be fine with any chromatic starfleet or Star Wars character showing up in the fanwork if that’s something the gifter would be interested in?
